Our Organisation

In 1999 a Koori Task Group with broad representation from Victoria’s Indigenous community (community members, academics and leaders in arts, sport and education) was established to make recommendations to VicHealth around the Indigenous aspect of its Mental Health Promotion Plan.

The Koori Task Group recommended a shift away from a mental illness focus towards a mental health and wellbeing framework featuring the importance of leadership. This resulted in the integrated Koori Communities Leadership Program comprising the following four key components:

  1. Victorian Koori Network for the Future
  2. Five Koori Communities Youth Leadership Projects
  3. A multi site evaluation of the Leadership Projects
  4. A Koori Imaging Project.

In 2003 as part of the Program, a first ever Indigenous Leadership Conference “Conference 21 – Positioning our Future” was held in Victoria. Much of the discussion and many of the conference recommendations form a relevant basis for the future planning directions of the ILNV.

Indigenous Leadership Network Victoria

During 2006 to 2007 with the assistance of Leadership Victoria the Indigenous Leadership Network Victoria was established as a legal entity.

  1. The Network is about people, relationships, ideas, knowledge and communication.
  2. The Network is about showing leadership; creating opportunities; setting the agenda; advocacy around policy, practices and resources.
  3. The Network will provide a unique environment for all Indigenous Victorians around the common theme of leadership in a non political environment that will recognize cultural identity.
  4. The Network will not act as a peak organisational body, a representational body or a service provision organisation.
